La Croisée Community Association

For neighbours in the La Croisée Community of Gatineau, Québec

  • What does “Community” mean?

The members of the La Croisee Community Association (178 and growing) understand the answer to that question.

Whatever words are used to describe community, we value it in one way or another. But if  words used to define community are difficult to grasp you can find them – in bibliographies/references, organizations and charities and even Ted Talks. You can find many others.

Another perspective is provided by the Community Foundations of Canada in their study “Vital Signs – “Belonging: Exploring Connection to Community”.  This study looks at the relationship between our sense of belonging and social participation in Canada.

“As you’ll discover throughout this report — belonging and social participation influence each other. The more we get involved in the community, the more we feel like we belong. The stronger our sense of belonging, the more willing we are to contribute to the community because we feel responsible for its well-being. Scientists and statisticians call that a positive correlation. We call it the key to community vitality.”

Their report offers a number of “snapshots” of Canadian community in 2015, and most certainly, another interesting read. You can find the Report – here.

  • Our Neighbours Day – a reflection of community

On Saturday, June 11th, many families in La Croisee came together for our annual Neighbours Day, despite the threat of bad weather.

    Thank you, everyone!

We are all grateful for the sense of community spirit behind it.
Like an Amish barn raising, neighbours and friends build our events by offering a small amount of their time in which ever way they can help.
From transportation, electricity and set-up, barbecue, music, salads, baking, games, donated prizes, accounting, translations, advertising and more, it is all brought – 100% – by community volunteers.

The $1:00 fee paid by families at the registration tent helped make this event truly “non-profit”, “revenue neutral” with more possibilities for the future.

A special thank you to our neighbour, Angela Hager, for leading this event co-ordination this year, despite the constraints of time and budget. Thanks, Angela!
And, of course, this event would not be possible, (for real!) – without all the community volunteers and local businesses who offered their support!

Thanks to neighbours: Derek Young, Samuel Clermont, Melanie Brassard, Angie Hagar, Warren Hagar, Allana Hayes, Lisa Sattler, Katherine Sepulveda, Josee Sisson, Mark Sisson, Annic McGuire, Lyne Forget-Lanthier, Laura Parpalita, Marie-Josee Larouche, Nancy Lessard, Larry Prickett, Martin McGuire, Rama Ndagano, Mary Saghbini, Sean Stevenson, Chad Barter, Todd Jolicoeur, Gaston Gagnon, Cristine LaCasse.

  • Bicycle Day in La Croisee, a fun and happy success.

Thanks to parents and neighbours, our community Bike Day was a success.

With a lucky break in the weather, many families, friends and neighbors came together and enjoyed our spring bike ride. Thanks to all who attended and the many volunteers that made this event possible.

A special thanks to La Croisee Street Representatives and event coordinators, Mary Saghbini and Mélanie Brassard!
Thanks to our local, generous sponsors and supporters…

  • La Croisée – Spirit of Christmas

Our annual Christmas event gathered many families and neighbours in our community and from across West Quebec.

To-gether, in the spirit of Christmas, we collected over 800 lbs of food for the Aylmer Food Centre.

A special thank you is offered, once again, to everyone who supported this event.

Thanks to the Aylmer Food Centre and the Bulletin d’Aylmer newspaper for their generous advertising support. As well, thank you to Joe at MacEwen’s Supreme Pizza for offering food and beverages for our volunteers, and to Ray Coutu (a La Croisée resident) for our large signage.

We also have much gratitude for all our volunteers, including our resident photographer – Patrick Bilodeau; our wonderful Santa Claus for his generous support; our Christmas Tree supplier, the City of Gatineau for its support and the Gatineau Golf Club for its beautiful hospitality.
